Total Lunar Eclipse, June 2011

Image
Hi folks,               How many of us would have witnessed the total lunar eclipse that passed off recently? (On June 15-16, 2011). This LUNAR ECLIPSE was one of the longest. Next one, as long as this, may occur in the year 2141.  Now, you would be wondering why I have this sudden interest in these heavenly phenomenons. I've always been interested in these eclipses, whether solar or lunar and also other astronomical happenings.        These eclipses are more of direct witnessing of the movements of moon(solar) or earth(lunar).  Total Solar eclipse happens during the day when the shadow of the moon falls on one portion of earth thus obstructing the rays from the sun. (Moon coming between sun and the earth).   Total lunar eclipse takes place when our earth comes between sun and the full moon, thus casting the shadow of earth on the moon. The ec...

Lathicharge at Ramlila Maidan (Baba Ramdev's protest)

Image
Hi folks,                How many of us know about the emergency period from June-1975 to March-1977? We might have heard of it, but may not know much of the details because either many of us might be too young or not born at all. But after the unprovoked police action on the sleeping protesters in Ramlila Maidan, we feel rudely awakened by the high handedness of the UPA government. Iam sure, many of us would have now browsed to get more knowhow about the emergency period as we find parallels between these two actions.                 Opponents of Indira Gandhi had long made allegations that the 1971 election was won by the electoral fraud. To put the long history short, socialist Jayaprakash Narayan garnered support from student unions, peasants, and labour organisations and organised a 'Total Revolution' to nonviolentl...

Our dear Uncle Pai

Image
Hi folks,           How are u all?? It has been a while since I contributed to this page. Have been busy with mundane things. But yesterday I read somewhere the news about the passing away of  Anant Pai, founder of Indian comics, especially Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle.                         Mr Anant Pai who worked with Times of India for sometime during 1960s found out that in a quiz competition children answered questions about Greek mythology, but failed to answer questions on Indian mythology. He quit the Times of India and along with late G. L. Mirchandani of India Book House he started India Comics. He founded Amar Chitra Katha series of comics giving colour and life to mythological stories, freedom fighters, famous personalities, jataka tales and much more. Compared to...

Sabarimala tragedy

Image
Hi folks,              It is already a week since the tragic incident of stampede happened in Sabarimala. Public memory being short, this incident will be almost forgotten by the end of this month. By the end of this year, the inflow of pilgrims in Erumeli will be more than the previous year. But have our authorities learnt any lesson from this tragedy? Will the pilgrims have a safe journey? What is Travancore Devaswom Board doing with all the money that they get? Will the safety of the Ayyappas be the first priority from now on?              Stampedes have happened in pilgrim centres all over the world and these incidents reflect the mismanagement of  temple authorities and also sometimes the selfishness of the devotees who come the...

Single Child: Alone or not?- My response which appeared in 'THE HINDU' Sunday Magazine

http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/mag/2010/12/19/index.htm What  was an exception in the yesteryears has become a rule now with the changing priorities of women. The women of today are more educated and career-minded and they look forward to achieving something in life and so they do not want to get bogged down by spending all the years bringing up the children. They feel that with a single child, they can give the best to him/her and also pursue their careers. But this is more prevalent in urban areas and metros and the population growth rate happens more in the rural areas in our country where the single child is not yet a norm. China implemented the rule of one-child norm and thus was able to reduce the growth rate significantly. This will not be easily possible in India, but if we educate and provide employment to the rural and poor women in our country, it will not only make our country prosper, but will also reduce the population growth rate, as their priorities will also ...

Spirit of every festive season

Image
Hi folks,            Another Christmas has passed but the festive mood will remain until the NEW YEAR which is just a week away. This last week  is the time to relax, unwind and look back at what the year was for each of us. The advent of every NEW YEAR fills us with hopes, positive energies, resolutions, etc. But all of us are aware that every year brings new joys, sorrows, fears, changes for better or worse. At the end of each year we should ask ourselves what are we doing to make world a better place to live in.                       Each festival lifts up the spirit of humanity. We have hundreds of festivals celebrated in hundred different ways. But the spirit of each festival and the message conveyed across is more or less the same. The spirit of  "universal peace, brotherhood, unity".  Let us all get together an...
