A bleeding, jinxed fiery February of 2019
Hello everybody,
The month of February that just passed us by is the month everybody would like to forget but will/should be remembered for many reasons. It was gone mostly unnoticed, but 2 Indian Air force pilots were killed on 1st, when the French built Mirage 2000 aircraft crashed just a few minutes after take-off at the HAL-airport in Bangalore. It did not create furor as these deaths are a part of those training sessions. But nevertheless, it is tragic like any other death.
Just like any other February 14th being round the corner, people all over the world including India were getting ready to celebrate Valentine's day with their lovers/spouses or celebrating anyone/anything they love. Lots of forwards, cartoons, jokes were circulated during the day in various social media platforms. Many of us updated their Whatsapp, Fb dps to highlight their Valentines. Little did we imagine that our country will be bruised by a dastardly terror attack at the end of the love day, nope, it became a sorrowful and a hate day! If any Indian is asked this question 'How is your josh?' on that day, the answer is lowest! The terror attack carried out in Pulwama district of Kashmir, for which Jaish-e-Mohammad (militant group of Pakistan) claimed responsibility, killed 40 CRPF jawans and left many injured. It shook the whole nation leaving everybody in tears and helplessness. The aftermath of that escalated the underlying tensions between two nations and there were 4 or 5 causalities of the armed force personnel across the LoC on February 18th killing major Vibhuthi Dhoudiyal. It took time for Mr. Imran Khan to respond to these attacks and he denied the involvement of Pakistan in these attacks. On February 26th, the Indian Government/Air Force carried out airstrike aiming to destroy the terrorist hub at Balakot in Pakistan giving out message that terrorism cannot be tolerated anymore.

Closer home in Bangalore, Wing commander Sahil Gandhi died in midair collision of two hawk trainer jets ( belonging to Surya Kiran Aerobatic team) during the practice session for the Airshow on February 24th. As if this tragedy was not enough, there was fire breakout in the parking lot on February 24th during the airshow, which charred about 300 or more parked cars! On the same day, there was a forest fire in Bandipur sanctuary destroying acres of the forest. The trigger for these fires is still not known. It is a common occurrence during the summer season. There was another forest fire and fire destroying many cars in a parking lot reported in Tamil Nadu too.
As if to end a disastrous month in a good note, The wing commander Mr Abhinandan was returned to India after 3 days of captivity which was hailed as a move from Imran Khan as a gesture of peace, which can still be viewed with some skepticism. Mr. Abhinandan became an overnight hero in India. But the last day of February was not spared too by the fate! Six IAF personnel and one civilian was killed in a MI-17 chopper crash in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir . This was due to a technical snag. Nevertheless, they are also in the list of martyrs (unofficially), as they were on a mission! As the tensions continue to flare up before the eve of the election, one can only hope there will be more peace ahead than this continuing bloodshed! Ultimately, nobody wins a war!
Praying for more peace,
Deepa.
