Random thoughts during lockdown peroid!

Hi friends,
As I write this, the entire world or most parts of the world are under lock down of varying periods imposed by Governments to save the humanity from that invisible virus which is now ruling the world! Corona, because it is shaped like a coronet, rules the world right now! Corona is a mystery, corona is invisible, corona is an enemy, corona is fascinating, corona is entertaining ( because we are all glued to the tv and social media absorbing everything about corona), corona is a peacemaker, corona is a leveler, corona is 2020's Olympics' single large player, corona is a killer, corona is for now invincible.
What started off with flu like and breathlessness symptoms in the province of Wuhan rapidly spread across all parts of the world and most countries of the world are currently in the lockdown to stop the rapid spread through human contact. Social distancing, #stayhome, #staysafe, #savelives have become the new mantras. An invisible, attacking protein molecule has changed the way the world or rather humans live. We took so many things for granted from the time we were born that we forgot our planet does not belong to humans only.

I returned to this page after almost about a week. It is more than 10 days now  after a strict lockdown is imposed in India to contain the community spreading.  If that happens in India, it is doomsday! Everyday is a game changer and a mystery waiting to be unfolded. What has started off from Wuhaan province of China rapidly spread to countries in Europe starting with Italy and to other parts of the world including US! Though the actual number of deaths in China remain a mystery to the world, the countries of Europe and US who did not handle with seriousness at first, find themselves grappling with the spread and the lack of resources. India's numbers looked less and under control for many days, but the Muslim community gathering in Nizamuddin during 2nd week of March seems to have spiked the number of spreads and something we all dread to see! That is nothing but the height of irresponsibility on the part of the organizers of the event! Otherwise, this virus has not devastated the countries in the southern hemisphere other than Iran. We need to see how long the invisible thing is going to rule the world!
Having grown up in a generation, which had not seen wars, emergency period, famines, epidemics or pandemics, this seems to be an eye-opener! The pandemics of the past like Spanish flu, plague had no borders and they spread from country to country killing millions of people. Coronavirus, which is declared as a pandemic by WHO, has once again proved that no borders, passports or visas are needed to travel to different countries. When it is attacking and still thriving, we as humans, devoid of race, caste, religion, region, colour, stand on the other side feeling helpless and desperately fighting that one common enemy!
When my husband used to say that during a crisis all the people are happy,  I felt that it sounded absurd. Now we know what it means. This is the time we set aside our day-to-day problems, pressure of  routine, peer push to 'achieve something in life', and so on. Suddenly we are all pushed and huddled together in one ship devoid of all differences just to fight and win against the one enemy. Our human bodies are all same for that virus.

Whatever we have taken for granted the whole of our lives suddenly appear so precious and out of reach. Out of innumerable 'privileges' we have enjoyed, I will just talk about a couple of things. The ability and choice to travel to places we want to see! As I have mentioned in the past, I like to travel to see new places inside and outside India. You can scroll down my blog to read my travel articles. Last year, we traveled to Europe to take part in the 'Amsterdam Marathon.' We planned to see five cities which were Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Belgium. I soaked into every essence of these cities and enjoyed every moment of it in each of these places. We are  grateful to God that we could visit those places to cherish memories for lifetime. Had we postponed that beautiful trip for some more months, it would not have happened for a long time to come. There were people who discouraged us from going to Europe that time warning that October is not a good time to visit as it will be pretty cold and our bodies would not be able to manage it. Even my husband was skeptical. But now, we are so glad that we didn't back off. Yeah, some opportunities do not knock the doors twice! If Europe looks off limits for eager travelers like us for a long time to come, most of the places appear to be in  another planet right now.
If many of the routine things look off-limits now, it is time to be grateful to things we did close to our home without thinking much. A walk to the grocery store, going to gym or swimming (if you are in a society), a walk close to our home, going to malls on weekends, eating out, watching movies, going for shopping, going for a drive, going to a beauty saloon, meeting people. When we are not able to do these things, it is time to look inwards. It is time to relax and feel our own breath. It is time to say thank you to God Almighty and the nature for the senses you become aware of including breathing. We have to be thankful that there is roof over our head and we can cook meals and eat, and also we are connected to the world virtually. There are lot of hobbies we can pursue during this lockdown which were lying dusted for the lack of time. This is a Godsend opportunity to spend more time with family, teach kids new skills which will help them later on,  read more books, giving exercise to your limbs by doing the housework which was outsourced to the maids.
Coronavirus is nature's way of saying to us to slowdown. Because of this pandemic all the mega events including Olympics are either postponed or cancelled.  Now that all kinds of transports are banned, the air is cleaner, we hear more chirping of birds, at least in news channels we see animals moving freely around the space which was 'invaded' by humans, admire the beauty in those empty roads and lanes etc. It is during this time that we are aware that our planet does not belong only to human species. When this crisis gets over and we start moving on, we should remember the hard lessons that we learnt from the mother nature.

Take care,
#stayhome   #stayhealthy  #staysafe

Deepa.

P.S. While I am grateful that I am sitting and enjoying the comforts of my own home and writing this article, I pray for those poor migrant workers find suddenly stranded in the middle without work,  transportation, daily wages, roof over their head and wanting to go home and be with their families.
